Zum Sängerkrieg 1917
Es singt und klingt in der Christenheit
Von Taten und Worten so groß,
Von dem Mann, der durch Wort und Schrift befreit
Viel Völker vom traurigsten Los.
Viel Rühmens und Lobens jetzund erschallt
Von weltbewegenden Taten:
Wie Luther vor Kaiser und Reich mit Gewalt
Des Worts viel Seelen beraten.
Der Ruhm und der Preis soll ihm bleiben, gewiß,
Ganz einzig erscheint uns als Fechter.
Der Mann, der dem Pabst die Macht entriß
Über viele — so viele Geschlechter!
Doch nennt, so ihr könnt, mir die herrlichste Tat,
Die Luther vollbrachte im Leben?
“Enchiridion” heißt die köstliche Saat,
Die vielfältige Frucht gegeben.
Drum singe und rühme und preise laut
Man Luthers Waffen und Wehr,
Doch acht ich als schönsten Schmuck der Braut
“Die reine Katechismus Lehr.”

Christianity sings and rings
Of deeds and words so great,
About the man who, through word and writing,
Frees many people from the saddest tasks.
Much boasting and praise is now ringing out
About earth-shattering fates:
How Luther, before emperor and empire,
Advised many souls with the force of the Word.
The fame and the prize shall remain with him, surely,
As a swordsman he might seem to us quite unique.
The man who took power from the Pope
Over many — so many generations!
But tell me, if you can, the most wonderful deed,
That Luther accomplished in his life?
“Enchiridion” is the name of the precious seed,
That provides such manifold fruit.
Therefore loudly sing and praise and glorify
Luther’s arms and defense.
But I regard as the most beautiful jewel of the bride
“The pure teaching of the catechism.”
